Your data, your call.

A summary in three sentences, then the long version. No dark patterns, no hidden trackers, no selling anything to anyone.

Plain-English summary

We collect what you log (food, workouts, weight) and your basic profile. We use it to run the app and to improve the experience — never to sell ads, never to share with third parties for marketing. You can export everything as CSV or delete your account at any time.

We will never sell your data. We will never use it to target ads. We will never share it with insurers, employers, or anyone else who has no business asking.

What we collect

To run Plate, we collect:

  • Account data: email address, optional display name, and password hash (or Apple/Google ID if you sign in with those).
  • Profile data: sex assigned at birth, date of birth, height, weight, activity selections, goals — all the inputs from onboarding.
  • Log data: meals, workouts, weight entries, timestamps. The substance of the app.
  • Photos: images you capture with the food scan are stored privately in our cloud storage so they show up next to the meal log.
  • Coach conversations: messages between you and Coach Kai, so the coach can reference your past chat in future replies.
  • Device data: OS version and app version, used for diagnostics and to know which features to support.

Your food photos

When you use the AI scan, the image is uploaded to our cloud storage (DigitalOcean Spaces) and a URL is sent to Anthropic for analysis. The photo is associated with your account and only visible to you; we don't share or sell food images.

If we ever want to use anonymised, low-resolution samples to improve the experience, it will be opt-in. Off by default. We'll never use a photo for training without your explicit consent.

How we use it

  • Run the app — show you your data, calculate your targets, generate recipes, power Coach Kai.
  • Send essential service emails (your login code, account changes, billing). Marketing emails are opt-in only.
  • Fix bugs (anonymised crash reports).
  • Comply with the law when legally required.

Who we share with

A short list of vendors who help us run Plate:

  • DigitalOcean — hosts our database and stores your food-scan images.
  • Anthropic — model provider for the AI scan, Coach Kai, and recipe generation. Your data is sent for inference only and not retained for training.
  • Resend — transactional email (your login code, account notices).
  • Apple & Google — payment processing on iOS and Android subscriptions, per their standard terms.

That's it. We don't share data with advertising networks, data brokers, or analytics resellers.

Your rights

You can, at any time, from inside the app or by emailing us:

  • Export all your data as CSV (Settings → Data → Export).
  • Correct anything that's wrong (edit profile, edit logs).
  • Delete your account and all associated data (You → Delete account). Cascades immediately.
  • Withdraw consent for any optional uses.
  • Restrict or object to processing — applicable under GDPR.
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

Retention

We keep your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile, logs, photos, and coach history are removed from our active systems within 7 days. Backups roll off after 90 days, after which the data is permanently unrecoverable.

Security

All traffic between your device and our servers is encrypted with TLS. Passwords are hashed with bcrypt. We rotate API keys regularly and never log secrets. If we ever experience a breach affecting your data, we'll notify you without undue delay and within 72 hours where required by law.

Children

Plate is not intended for users under 13. We don't knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has signed up, email hello@plate.best and we'll delete the account immediately.

Changes to this policy

We'll notify you in-app or by email at least 14 days before any material change to this policy. Minor edits (typo fixes, broken links) we'll push silently and note the new effective date at the top.
